Status update

I’m currently using a custom QtExtended image, based on Hackable1, a 2.6.28 kernel and a recent QtExtended snapshot running from a micro-SD card. The image is not yet 100% working, but I’m able to  use my FR as a reliable mobile phone with an acceptable running time and a fun hacking device at the same time.

I expect to start looking at Navit again in the next couple of weeks, I’ll keep you posted.

Cheers,

Filip.

Roadmap or Navit ?

In Qtopia 4.4 (Qt-Extended) there is the new location API which claims the GPS device and makes it impossible to use the current gpsd. As such, the previous version of Roadmap won’t work on a Qt-Extended (4.4).  The proper solution is to modify gpsd to use the qt-extended api instead of /dev/ttySAC, but as far as I’m aware this has not been done yet.

However, I’m currently evaluating if I want to continue porting/improving Roadmap, or alternatively start working on Navit ( http://navit.sourceforge.net ) . The advantage of navit is that it supports a wider choice of maps (including commercial ones) with complete coverage and it is supposed to do routing better.

I always appreciate feedback on whatever you think is the best solution for the FR (roadmap, navit or even another one)

cheers,

Filip.

RoadMap GPS navigation - Updated with maps howto

One of the missing applications on Qtopia on the Neo is a GPS application. Check this page RoadMap on the Neo if you want to see the result of my experiments with RoadMap cross-compiled for the FreeRunner.
